Narrative Image of Blood Simple

Looking at the dvd front cover, the audiences attention will imediately have questions to ask about the central image such as "Why can we only see the bottom half of his body" "What is he hiding?" and "Why has he got a shovel?"

The title is written in blood red colour and the audiences attention is drawn to the word 'Blood' which makes the audience ask "Will death be a main theme of the film?" "Is the man in the shot a killer?"

There is no tag line which leaves questions unanswered and the audience will want to watch the film to find the answers to their questions.

Some of the typical features of the thriller genre all appear in the cover, such as the shaddow, the word 'Blood,' the colour red, the darkness and the shovel which all suggest thriller.

You can tell that it is an independent film becuase the main actress is relatively unknown. It also isn't very dramatic, its just a simple image, which lets you know it isn't a major hollwood production. The image seems very set up, and the signifiers of thriller and theme of murder are so over-done, which creates a sense of dark comedy.

don't spoil it with 'there wasn't much more i could say'!!! it sounds so negative.

this is fine, your analysis was very good in the 1st place, you just needed to pull together the films identity a bit more thoroughly and draw on the narrative image theory a bit more.

you've got the idea of enigma very well, probably just need to focus on the combination of genre features (shadows, feet, shovel, blood) - all signifiers we recognise as thriller - with features like coen brothers, their past films, unknown actress etc-
all leading us to the idea that this is a rather independent production, not a big hollywood glossy. perhaps a bit of a cult movie.

also there's something vaguely comedy about the shot (the genre features being so overdone perhaps) and the coen brothers are known for rather dark comedies, so there's that as well.

good effort overall though james

overall assessment of your blog:

its difficult to know what to say james, as your blog doesn't consist of very much.

there is evidence of a small amount of independent research and one film idea very early on but its very limited in both range and depth.

you don't use any of the theory we've done in class - you could apply any of it to any film clip - whatever you like.

but as evidence of approx 5 weeks work around thriller, this just deosn't cut it, I'm afraid. i would suggest you have a look at the main blog post for ideas of how to improve it, otherwise your grade for independent research will remain at the level it is now - a low C, if that.

have a look at some of the other student blogs to give you an idea of the standard you should be aiming for. if you want to get a better grade you will have to act immediately.

if you need help, come and ask. If I'm honest this is disappointing as I think you're better than this.
